Day 34 - Santa Fe

Ever since I saw the movie Newsies and the knew about the musical RENT I have always wanted to go to Santa Fe. Since it was only an hour from Albuquerque we decided to take a day trip there. It was a Saturday and sunny with a slight chill to keep it comfortable.

Santa Fe happens to be the capitol of New Mexico, but you would never think that because it is such a small “city”. There were no skyscrapers. In fact it seemed like there were no buildings in the entire city over three stories. I really appreciated this though because no matter where we were in the city we got a fantastic view of the mountains.

The first thing we did was walk to the Cross of the Martyrs. This was a large cross which sat atop a hill that overlooked the city of Santa Fe. Along the path to get there we read information on how Santa Fe is older than the United States itself. At the top was a great view of the city.

The next place on the list of things to see was the plaza. The plaza is located at the center of the city’s main hub area. The buildings along the way there was just very cool to look at. They certainly had the pueblo-esk style architecture. There were a fair amount of people walking around. The plaza was a perfect square of little shops, restaurants, and hotels that bordered a park where people were playing music and selling little knick-knacks.

For anyone who is going to be in the area I would recommend the Blue Corn CafĂ©. The food was DE-lish and the portions were very large. After lunch we continued to walk around the plaza area. We shopped around a bit and I even bought a little something. I have been searching far and wide across the southwest for this purchase, trying not to empty my wallet too much. But in one of the stores I had to try some cowboy boots on. There was a sign outside saying the entire store was 40% off! How could I pass it up! Well after the owner of the store and I got to know each other a bit she was able to knock off a bit of the price and I bought my first pair of cowboy boots! I’m still currently trying to break them in but I’m thinking that I look like I could ride a horse. Granted the horse I have in mind goes up and down a pole while traveling in a circle, but hey?...cowboys sometimes go on merry-go-rounds.

There really wasn’t that much to the rest of the day. We headed home again and I believe we started a new season of Dexter. Tomorrow was all about Albuquerque and I was sure of one thing; we weren’t going to see Bugs Bunny. He always takes wrong turns at Albuquerque.
