Day 39 - Wide Open Spaces

Okay one night down, two to go. I’m not trying to sound like I’m wishing the days away, but it was a COLD, COLD nights sleep. But as cold as it was in the morning, it was really amazing waking up to a very brisk, fresh aired morning. Really made me feel like I was in the heart of nature…to a certain point of course.

When everybody was ready to go for the day, we drove to the visitor’s area and parked the car and started walking toward the “rim”. Personally I have seen hundreds of pictures, paintings, TV shows, Youtube clips, et cetra…. of the Grand Canyon, but it did not remotely prepare me for what I was about to witness. The view was literally (and I know I might overuse this next adjective, but this is the time where it actually holds true) breathtaking. All I could do was stand against the guardrail and say “WOW”. People say that it is big, but the word big just does not do it justice. The foreground of the canyon is obviously “real” looking. But the landscape in the background just looks like a giant painting. It is so far back that your mind cannot put the two “grounds” into a perspective.

We walked along the rim for a bit and just took in the different views of the canyon. Later that day we had one of our first real outdoor cooking experiences. We did a little bit more driving to different points along the rim. Word on the street says there a couple in particular for the best sunsets. So before we headed to the sunset, we had a quick bite to eat. The sunset to say the least was probably the most beautiful sunset I had ever seen. The way the sun hit the rocks really had an affect on the colors we saw. The sun made them look even betterWe went to the grocery store close to the visitors center and got our cans of soup for dinner.

I certainly will appreciate the next home cooked meal I eat.
